In Charlotte, NC the family portrait season is upon us! For me, Daylight Saving Time marks the start of the most wonderful time of the year. Longer days equals more gorgeous light which means I’m one happy family photographer. Don’t get me wrong, snow makes amazing pictures but I welcome spring with open arms. We are lucky that winter usually doesn’t last too long in Charlotte. But it has been very unpredictable lately so I’m always excited to see the flowers blooming, hear the birds singing and start planning my spring and summer family portrait sessions.
One of the first thing my clients ask is, “What should we wear?” I always say styling a photo shoot doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Seriously, some of the best resources for coordinated yet not overly matching outfits are Old Navy and Gap. Both stores cater to the entire family so it’s easy to outfit the whole gang there. These two stores alone are always a great starting point, especially for selecting and coordinating the kids’ outfits. Here are two more great starting points:
My Family Photography: What to Wear Guide
Don’t miss my Family Photography: What to Wear Guide which includes lots of tips and some of my favorite family attire groupings and palettes for inspiration. I’ll give you a 2-tip family portrait styling sneak peek:
- Tip #1: Let me help you. Use the resources listed here and text me pictures. Moms seriously call me from the mall and text me options. I welcome it. I love it. Your photographer should be an active partner in styling your session.
- Tip #2: Comfort is key. I want your personalities to shine – for you to be comfortable hugging, sitting, standing and the many poses in between. Pick attire that allows you the freedom to have fun. Some kids worry if they have on something extra fancy. And then some kids, can’t wait to model their new attire. By all means, go buy – its part of the fun and helps the local economy – just don’t make it a big deal. Don’t force them to wear something uncomfortable and the same goes for you. Wear clothing that you feel good in and it will show.
