My First Family Film

If you think I’m crazy for making my first family film during the busy spring photography season, you would be right. It was insane. BUT SO WORTH IT.

Every year I fool myself into thinking that once the fall photo season and Christmas holidays are over, we can coast through spring and summer. And every year, April madness takes over. With spring family sessions, end of school responsibilities, both kids’ birthdays, spring sports, final performances and more, April and May are always a whirlwind. I knew that. Really I did. It was always in the back of my mind. I just suppressed it because I wanted to take Everyday Films – The Film Workshop so badly. And honestly the April workshop was the only one I could fit into my 2017 schedule. So yes, I knowingly signed up for this level of crazy. But you know what? I did it! And I LOVED it. And I can’t wait to make another family film. Emily Mitchell is an amazing teacher. In just four short weeks, she took our class from simply turning on the video button to the final product seen below. We explored camera movements, stabilization techniques, audio capture, music mixing, licensing, color grading for film and so much more. I even learned another editing program, Adobe’s Premier Pro for film editing, which sounded completely daunting four weeks ago. I’m so grateful to Emily for teaching this class and for making the learning manageable during such a busy time.

Enjoy this peek into my own family’s whirlwind April. This entire film was shot on my Nikon d610 using in-camera audio. The music is licensed from Mirror Mirror Music.

Welcome to my blog! I’m a child and family photographer based in Charlotte NC.

Parents always ask, “what if my kid doesn’t listen?” My answer: that’s actually perfect. Don’t tell your children I said so, but personalities shine when listening ears fail. I welcome the silly. I want the giggles. I watch for honest smiles, real connections and stolen family moments.

This applies to your big kids and high school seniors too. Wink, Wink.
