Today I get to share an Uptown Senior Session featuring someone I’ve known since he started kindergarten. Meet my long-time client and friend, John. He’s been best friends with my daughter Kate since they ran walked quietly through the halls of Elizabeth Lane Elementary. John graduated from Providence High School (PHS) on Monday, June 13 and will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine this fall. He plans to major in Government and possibly minor in German and/or Environmental Studies. Long term, he hopes to work in public policy.
I chose Bowdoin because I wanted a smaller school with a strong liberal arts focus and I fell in love with Brunswick and the Maine coast.

Executive Board & Eagle Scout
“Chose” is the right word. As the Student Body President with a whole host of other amazing achievements and awards to his name, John had some incredible college options. I’m so excited for his adventures at Bowdoin. They are lucky to have such a rock star student and community leader headed their way.
John has been a part of PHS student government in various Executive Board roles and class councils throughout high school. He is a National Honor Society member and a candidate for the AP Capstone diploma. He has also been a co-president of the PHS German Club for the past two years. Outside of school, John is an Eagle Scout. Yes that’s right. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank. It’s a HUGE deal.
Bagpipes, Pilgrimages & Senior Memories
Speaking of unique distinctions, John also plays the bagpipes. He has played and competed with the Queen City Juvenile Pipes & Drums for many years. He is also a Ruling Elder at Myers Park Presbyterian Church and chaired the church’s Youth Council.
On Monday, John spoke at his class’s graduation and yesterday, he boarded a flight to Madrid. He will be walking the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail through Spain and Portugal for a second time. This year, his sister Sara is joining him. I hope they have time to reflect on his awesome senior year as they explore. John’s favorite senior memories involve his Leadership class:
My favorite senior memories are working with the Leadership class and student government to help bring the school back together coming out of Covid. I absolutely love my Leadership family and will never forget all that we were able to accomplish and the memories we’ve made.
J. Schubert
John, I am immensely proud of you. You’ve always been such an amazing leader for both your peers and the younger siblings. You’ve set an awesome example for them all and you inspire us all to make the world a better place. Thank you for being such a huge part of our family for the last 13 years. I know you are going to be a huge part of the Bowdoin family too.
Here are some highlights from John’s Uptown Senior Session with his family.
